Committee Statement

Dear Postgraduates,

We would like to thank those of you who took the time to attend our EGM last night; it was fantastic to hear your thoughts and concerns around the upcoming industrial action. For those who could not attend, please see the minutes attached here.

As you will already know, members of the University and College Union (UCU) have successfully voted to commence industrial action over pensions and working conditions. The industrial action is taking place from today (1st December) to Friday 3rd December, with Action Short of a Strike (which will primarily involve working to contract) continuing until 3rd May 2022. Please see the Keele UCU website for further information: https://www.keeleucu.co.uk/action2021/.

As your Elected Officers, we have been proactively meeting with senior management within the University, and also Keele UCU, to better understand the situation and to plan our support for our members – for you.

We will continue to meet with the senior management of the University to; encourage them to utilise their voice as a member of UUK to push for national negotiations to resume, to lobby for any wages unpaid due to strike action to be put into a student hardship fund, and to ensure that any adverse effects on your studies are minimised.

We understand that some of you are likely to face further disruption to you courses over this period, but we are also aware that some of our postgraduate students currently find themselves facing uncertainty and challenge due to the issues UCU are striking against. Our stance at the KPA is one of support, and we offer solidarity to all postgraduate students, whether teaching or non-teaching, who are impacted by the upcoming strike action.

We are here for any queries or concerns you may have, and we are always ready to lend a listening ear.
