THE KPA BURSARY
The KPA Bursary is a fund open to all postgraduate students, regardless of what course or degree you are studying. Students may apply for an amount between £50 and £500 to aid with their research, subject to the approval of the KPA Disbursement Committee.
Just a few of the costs the KPA Bursary will cover include:
-
Conference fees (at home or abroad)
-
Travel within the UK (fuel costs calculated at 35pence per mile for car travel; train travel is automatically given at student rail card prices)
-
Equipment for field work related to your dissertation
-
Access to archives and research materials (at home or abroad)
-
Accommodation costs related to your visit (at home or abroad)
The KPA Bursary will not cover:
-
Flights to or travel within a foreign country
-
Equipment NOT related specifically to your study, such as laptops
-
University or off-campus term-time accommodation
-
Tuition fees
Successful applicants to the Bursary in the past have attended, amongst others, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in Geneva, the 9th Alpine Conference on Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in France and the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam.
Your application form must be signed by you and your supervisor, by hand or electronically. Failure to provide these two signatures will mean that your application is automatically rejected.
The Bursary is usually very popular, and we receive a high volume of applications; try to make yours as clear, informative and detailed as possible in order to stand out for a greater chance of success.
Please ensure that you complete ALL sections of the form accurately.

SANTANDER UNIVERSITIES
Please note this scheme only runs between March and April of a given year.
The Santander Travel Bursary is operated by Keele in partnership with Santander Universities, offering travel bursaries to support overseas travel and overseas projects undertaken by Keele students and academic staff. Applications can be made to receive an award of up to a maximum of £1,000.
-
Travel to undertake volunteering work
-
Travel to Latin America or other Spanish-speaking countries
-
Travel to other Santander Universities partner countries
-
Travel to develop new networks or projects with overseas partners
-
Travel to participate in an organised expedition
The application process asks for no more than 500 words describing the reasons you want to travel, the benefits you will gain as an individual (life experience, contribution to society, career development, overseas work experience, etc), how much you are applying for and what you intend to use the funds for. Successful applicants will be required to write a short report on their use of the funds and the benefits they get from the travel/project. The Santander schemes attract high levels of interest: consequently, this is a competitive process where applications will be measured against success in articulating responses to the criteria above. The final outcomes will be determined by a panel of senior academics.
